Joey Galloway brings graying goatee to Pittsburgh
2009-03-23

To this point, the Steelers had been bystanders in free agency, only making headlines when saying goodbye to a player like Bryant McFadden, Nate Washington or Kendall Simmons. That was until yesterday, when super-veteran Joey Galloway visited town.

Up until 2008, Galloway had been slapping Father Time in his wrinkled old face every time he stepped on the field. Galloway remained remarkably productive into his mid-30's, topping the 1,000-yard mark in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Making those numbers even crazier is the fact that he achieved them with guys like Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski, and Jeff Garcia as his quarterback.

Father Time gave Galloway a wedgie in 2008, though, as he fought a foot injury and lost most of his playing time to Antonio Bryant, who finally decided to be good.

The question for Galloway is this: Was it a simple injury and a lack of playing time that kept him from being productive in 2008? Is the speed still there? Or was it Father Time taking control for good in his ongoing wrestling match with Joey Galloway?

If it's the former, Galloway could be useful to the Steelers as a number three wideout and a deep threat. Again, they lost Nate Washington, who filled that role for them last year, and it doesn't seem like anyone in the Steelers organization is comfortable putting that much responsibility on the shoulders of Limas Sweed.

Sweed, by the way, was 11 years old when Galloway caught his first pass in the NFL.
